Continued from 11/6/10. Later that same day after telling the nurses we had opted not to breast feed FJ I found out the real reason why they had exchanged looks about what I'd said. In a very politically correct way they explained that maybe my lactation nurse had not been a good match and that if I was willing to try once more they would make sure I got a different nurse. I always like to keep an open mind about things and I really did want to have a good experience because so many love breast feeding. So, I told them sure, why not. I would give it one more shot. I was excited with the mere fact that my breast reduced boobs were actually producing milk! I'm really glad I gave it one more chance. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life. This nurse was more gentle and described things to me before just stuffing my son's face with boob. She also used a nipple guard, which is like a plastic shield, over the nipple area. My breasts may have been able to produce milk but the nipples were not getting hard enough. FJ was used to a bottle nipple and going to mine which stayed pretty flat was too confusing for him. The guard helped a lot. It took some repositioning but finally he latched on and for the next 20 minutes on each breast he was a happy kid. Something about the bond during this experience is extremely moving. It is difficult for me to put into words but I'm so glad I tried again. To be continued...
